Research and Development for a Sustainable Future
Gema Polimer has been shaping R&D activities in the plastics industry in line with the increasing global trends towards high-performance, sustainable, and environmentally friendly plastic products in recent years. Gema, which began its R&D efforts with its own resources in 2014, now continues these activities through state-supported projects such as TÜBİTAK and KOSGEB.
The R&D team, consisting of engineers and chemists with bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees, operates in a 500 m² R&D laboratory equipped with advanced technologies at the company’s facility in the İzmir Aegean Free Zone. The team is involved in the entire process—from literature and market research to laboratory-scale prototype development, testing, analysis, industrial-scale production, and commercialization of new products.
The Gema Polimer R&D Laboratory is equipped with laboratory-scale twin-screw extruders, blown and cast film machines, and injection molding machines for prototype trials, as well as state-of-the-art devices for plastic material characterization and compliance testing, including FTIR, DSC, HDT, tensile, impact, density, MFI, and more.
The main focus of R&D activities is the development of compostable, biodegradable, and bio-based bioplastic compounds, as well as other sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic plastics. Additionally, the development of high-performance plastic products with enhanced functional properties—such as strength, durability, flame resistance, heat resistance, and electrical conductivity—represents another significant area of Gema’s R&D efforts.
